Common Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections

DEAR ASK THE DOCTOR: What are symptoms of urinary tract infections?

DEAR TONI:  Women who have urinary tract infections often report dysuria (painful or burning sensation when peeing), an increased frequency or urge of urination and lower abdominal discomfort or pain.  It is not uncommon to report blood in the urine.  In more severe cases, women may report back pain and fevers.  In certain conditions like pregnancy, women may report no symptoms.  You should consult your doctor. They can perform a simple urine test in the office to help with the diagnosis.

Urinary tract infections can be treated quickly with a short course of antibiotics.  When experiencing the above symptoms, I always advise women to increase there water intake to help clear their infection.
