Dear Ask The Doctor: The abscess is on my left buttock and it has a drain consisting of Iodoform packing. What I want to know about personal hygiene...do I need to cover up the draining abscess (i.e.) attempt to waterproof it while I am showering or is it ok to get the draining adscess wet?

Dear Bill: It is generally best to keep the wound and dressing as dry as possible. Bacteria and other germs tend to prefer moist environments in which to multiply. So when you shower you should attempt to “waterproof” the dressing as best you can while you shower.
