Knee pain after ACL repair

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had Acl surgery a little over one week ago, and evrything was going fine, but now i can't bend my knee without severe pain. Up to today I could do that just fine. I've tried ice and massaging my leg but nothing helps. My lower back also hurts.

Dear Kylee: You have not described any other symptoms such as increased warmth, swelling or fever which would suggest a possible infection in the knee joint. There are a few complications of ACL repair that can present with pain. These are nerve injury, infections and failure of the repair. You should have your knee examined by your orthopedic surgeon to rule out these complications.
